July 1st – Pursuit Racing….!!

Great breeze!!  There were 4 boats out – Mark and Toby, Steve and Simon, John Watling and his helm whose name I don’t know and Jonathan and me.  It was a lovely 4-5.  We all launched rather late and just made it to the start in time.  Very interesting course with a single beat up to the top of the reservoir with a zig-zag of 2 reaches (first  just ok to carry a kite) then a run and a 2 sail fetch back to the leeward mark.  Relatively short legs so needed good crew work at the marks to get the kite pulling quickly.

Mark pulled out a reasonable lead on the first beat and seemed to hold the gap from Steve all the way round (but you’ll have to ask them as I only saw the first bit). I think Mark said they caught everyone but a laser (which they weren’t sure whether they nearly lapped – I can’t find the results on the club website) John Watling bailed out after one round when he was worried about the grinding sound coming from his rudder.  We bailed out after two because Jonathan had shoulder problems –we were out of the action having had to stop to re thread the jib on the first beat and get a spinnaker sheet from under the boat on a launch.
